Wildlife and Conservation at Ballogie Estate, Royal Deeside

At Ballogie Estate we are passionate about our land and our environment. As a family-run estate since 1850, we appreciate the responsibility we have to our local wildlife and natural habitat. We are proud of our surroundings and would like to offer you the opportunity to experience for yourself what we see every day – but never take for granted.

Ballogie Estate works closely with farming, wildlife and conservation groups to ensure that Ballogie can be enjoyed by future generations of guests and visitors.

 Ballogie estate Capercaille

Conservation of our natural habitat is a priority at Ballogie. Part of our conservation strategy is working closely with our neighbours to assist in the survival of the most north easterly group of capercaillie in Scotland by improving the habitat, encouraging blueberry growth and controlling predators. We also actively support the national campaign to preserve our native red squirrels, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and the Forestry Commission,

Ballogie Estate Conservation

The wildlife to be found at Ballogie is diverse, rich and varied. We are proud to have on the estate seven of the ten British endangered species including Capercaille, Red Squirrels, Black Grouse, Brown Hares, Scottish Crossbills, Fresh Water Pearl Mussels and Lampreys as well as Hedghogs, Badgers, Stoats, Otters, Curlews, Oyster Catchers, Buzzards and other raptors to name but a few.

There is nothing like warm Scottish hospitality and a decent place to lay your head at the end of a rewarding day’s exertion. When it comes to accommodation, you can choose the exclusive use of Ballogie House which can sleep up to 13 guests; our newly refurbished, seven bedroom Potarch Lodge – recently upgraded to the highest standard and suitable for up to 14 guests. Both properties are perfect for larger parties who like to socialise after a rewarding day’s stalking. If you are planning to holiday with a smaller group, you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of one of our beautiful holiday cottages – Greenlands, a lovely, stone-built, traditional farm steading conversion, which can accommodate between 4-6 people, and Ford Cottage, which can cater for up to 7 guests. It has a wonderful new extension which includes an open plan kitchen, wood burning stove, and floor to ceiling picture windows with stunning views over the river. All of our accommodation is finished to a very high standard and are ideal for a friends and family stalking break or group holiday. Our properties also provide the perfect base for exploring the many visitor attractions within the area including National Trust for Scotland castles, Craigievar - a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture; Crathes - an enchanting 16th century tower house, and Drum – one of Royal Deeside’s top historic attractions.
