Forestry on Ballogie Estate

The woodlands on Ballogie extend to 1628ha, approximately 60% of Ballogie land.  Of this 260ha is native pinewood that is successfully naturally regenerating. Much of the forest area is managed as continuous cover with mixed species and mixed age forestry. Where natural regeneration is not feasible a more traditional system of clear fell and replant is followed.

The most prevalent species on Ballogie is Scots pine. There are plantations of other conifers as well as mixed broadleaves. The policy woodlands are dominated by mature trees and broadleaves and these along with riparian woodlands and birch woods, provide diverse woodland habitats. Within these woodlands lies the ‘Queen of the firs’, a Scottish heritage listed tree and one of the tallest Scots Pine in Scotland.

The woodland habitats support several protected species such as red squirrel, badgers, pine marten, and Scottish cross bill. There are several designated areas across the estate (Sites of Special Scientific Interest, River Dee Special Area of
Conservation and Glen Ferrick Caledonian Pinewood).

In the Craigmore woods by Potarch, there are signposted woodland walks.

In early 2024 we renewed our Long term Forest Plan with Scottish Forestry. Our timber is now FSC and PEFC Certified.

Ballogie Estate Enterprises is a founding member of Deeside Woodland Products (a timber marketing & harvesting Co-operative), which coordinates marketing of over 9500 ha of forestry and is a key producer of all timber products from quality saw logs to biomass renewable fuel.
